THE COASTAL DEFENCES Capetown. Marcn 4. Speaking in the House of Assembly, the Prime Minister, General Smuts, said that the Japanese drive westwards did not make it necessary to bring back South African troops from Libya. The Japanese danger had been foreseen, and steps had been taken to strengthen South Africa's coastal defences. The Government hao made sure that South Africa was safe and properly defended. Since the fail of Singapore there has been a great spurt in recruiting for part-time coastal defence, and also an intensification of Home Guard training. g
