ECONOMIC MISSION
U.S. NEGOTIATIONS WITH SOUTH AFRICA New York, March 4. The Washington correspondent of the New York Times says that an economic mission is leaving for South Africa in order to negotiate for increased production and amplified shipments of essential metals from South Africa, particularly chrome, asbestos, and copper. Officials hope it will be possible to induce South Africa to reduce her gold production and employ the machinery and labour rather for vital war metals, for which Washington is reported to be prepared to pay an amount equivalent to the present purchase of gold.
