RANGITIKEI COUNTY

MEETING E.P.S. EXPENSES REPORTS ON DAMAGED ROADS. In future, the Rangitikei County Council will pay 50 per cent, of its share of expenditure incurred b\ E.P.S. committees functioning within the county, subject to the expenditure being approved by the council’s representatives on the various committees. This decision was reached by the council at its monthly meeting in Marton yesterday, when it was decided also that county representatives on the various committees have power to authorise expenditure and. certify the correctness of any accounts. Cr. W. Doole presided in the absence of the chairman, Cr. K. W. Dalrymple, and also m attendance were Crs. G. L. Marshall, A. S. Coleman, J. Brice, R. G. Dalziell, A. D. Mair, V. Smitn, L. Hammond and L. E. Deacon, and Messrs. A. V. Brown (acting-county clerk) and S. A. R. Mair (county engineer). The engineer reported that in the Porewa Riding a low portion of the Kakariki Roaci, near the bridge, had been raised. This area had been seriously flooded in the past. In the Wangaehu Riding all slips had been cleared irom the Kauangaroa-Okirae roans. Repairs had been completed to the Turakina Valley road at Chirnside’s Junction by raising and sanding the formation. Other portions of the road, damaged by floods and slips, had also been repaired. Cloudbursts in the Awarua Riding last month had again damaged, roads. A large culvert on the Moawhango Valley road at Hiwera Junction was washed out and had been replaced by four-foot concrete pipes. The Makopua and Inland roads were badlyblocked with slips, and other roads were also damaged. Labour was not available lo open these roads, but in the near future a bulldozer would bt employed, in the affected areas. Roads in ihe*Te Kapua Riding had again sui--I’ered through local rain storms. Two bulldozers were at work and traffic was restored on all roads except the Watershed. Metal repairs were being carried out where possible. A bulldozer, grader, and metal lorries were working on the Mangamahoe road. The Upper Turakina Valley road had been opened to traffic and metal repairs would be carried out when the Mangamahoe road was completed.
