RED ( ROSS “SHOP” DAY A successful “shop” day in aid of the Red Cross funds, was held on Sat- | urday. There was a large supply of | i produce sent in. which found a ready ' sale, also jams, cakes, etc. A number i of cash donations were also received. This was the first appeal made by the society for some time and the promoters are to be congratulated on their efforts, which realised £55. The winners of the competitions are as follows: Leghorn rooster, won by Mrs. V. Parsons; tin of Danish biscuits, made and donated by Mrs. Severinsen. won ny Mrs. Haydon; tray and basket, donated by Mrs. E. Welch, won by Mrs. J. F. Thurston: Christmas lamb (disposed of in three pieces) won by Mr. Haydon Mr. James and Dr. McDiarmid. SOLDIERS' SWIMMING CARNIVAL The Taihape Swimming Club held a successful carnival for soldiers from ■ Waiouru on Saturday afternoon. I There were some good exhibitions of i swimming and diving. Amongst those competing were: Sergeant-Major J. T. Clarke, New Zealand beltman champion for 19381940, and winner of the Australasian surf championship in 1937, and Ser-geant-Major R. S. Hatchwell. New Zealand 100 yards champion and run-ner-up in the 220 yards for 1939-1940. All races were strongly contested and a shield presented by the swimming club, and won last year by the 2nd. Hawke's Bay Regiment, was carried off this time by the 2nd. Battalion of the Tank Brigade with 23 points. H.Q. Battalion was runnerup. with 15 points. The shield was presented to the winning team by Captain Sullivan, who thanked the club on behalf of the men. and expressed the hope that a similar meeting might be arranged shortly. 50 Yards Breaststroke.
