FREE TRAMWAY TRAVEL GRANTED

SOLDIER WHO IS HOSPITAL OUT-PATIENT A discharged soldier recently invalided home from the Middle East, who is receiving Treatment at the Wanganui Public Hospital, has been granted free travel on the Wanganui tramway system. This decision was reached by the City Council, on the motion of the Mayor, Hon. W. J. Rogers, M.L.C.. at the monthly meeting last night. The question was raised by the Wanganui City Patriotic Committee, which stated in a letter to the council that the soldier concerned was living at Wanganui East and was required to make five trips a week to the hospital, the cost of each return fare being Is. While asking that the soldier be provided with free transport on the trams, the Patriotic Committee stressed that he was receiving a pension of £2 10s a week and had been assisted with tram fares. The committee felt, however, that help of this kind should be given by the Government or local bodies. The Mayor said he was taking this question up with the Government and suggested that other cases could be dealt with on their merits. Cr. E. W. Merewether said he was very giad the Mayor had taken up this attitude, and added that the case of the man concerned was being placed before the Returned Soldiers Association.
