FURTHER EXHIBITION
EMPIRE ART COLLECTION ARRANGED FOR WANGANII Described as "Exhibition J. 20th Century Contemporary Art." the eolilection of 200 works from the Empire ; Art Loan Society will again be exhibited in the Sarjeant Gallery. Wanganui. I The collection was hung tn the I gallery for two months early in 1939. and has already been shown in the principal cities of Australia and New Zealand. A few months ago it went to Dunedin, but because of shipping difficulties caused by the war. the pictures remained in Otago instead of being returned to England. With a view to again securing this collection for Wanganui, the Sarjeant Gallery. Library and Opera House Committee commun'eated w'th Mr. John Barr. Auckland, who represents the Empire Art Loan Society in New Zealand. The committee advised that it was prepared to pay the cost of the collection being shippet from Dunedin to Wanganui, and ultimately pay the cost of freight to the port of embarkation. Mr. Barr subsequently advised that the society was favourable to the exhibition being shown again in the Sarjeant Gallery on tne terms and conditions offered by the committee. Referring to the committee’s activities. the chairman. Cr. J. J. Scott, said at the monthly meeting of the Wanganui City Council on Tuesday night that every endeavour was being made to have the collection in Wanganui before the Christmas holidays. It was hoped to have the pictures hung before the start of the holidays The collection would remain in the gallery for an indefinite period.
