JUDGING IN PENS AND ON THE HOOKS WAITOTARA BREEDER WINS (IP Thr Patca Freezing Company's Challenge Cup. donated for lhe winning entry of fat lambs, judged on the hooks, in the competition promote! by the Waverley A and F. Association. has been won this yeai by Mr Fred Hopkinson, Waitotara, The competition is judged in two sections—"on the hoof” at the yards, and "on the hooks” at the Patea works. The winner in the "on the hooks section takes the Challenge Cup. The results were as follows;

I The first section of the competition was judged by Mr. R. Mitchell, Wanganui, at Freeman R Jackson's saleyards. last Friday. Thirty-two competitors' lambs were penned and they created great interest to a large gathering of farmers present. Th. lambs were a particularly even lot this year, and very careful and expert judging was necessary to find the winners. Mr. Mitchell expressed his keen appreciation of the quality of the lambs placed before him. particularly as it had been a difficult year for breeders.

Mr. E. Hansen, chief grader for the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board, was the judge on the hooks at Fatea. Addressing competitors he said that it was a long time since he had judged such a wonderfully even lot of lambs. They were a credit to the exhibitors and the district, and would compare favourably with any exhibit in New Zealand. The winning pen was an ideal pen of show lamhs. hut it was only just a fraction ahead of many other pens.
