RENTING OF HOUSES IN AUSTRALIA
NEW REGULATIONS (Recd. 5.5 p.m.) Canberra. Nov. 29. No dwelling house in New South Wales letting at less than £4 4s a week can now be let at a rent greater than that which was paid on August 31. 1939. Regulations gazetted provide that where rent has been increased since lhe wa it must immediately be reduced to the pre-war figure. The regulations empower the tenant to call on the landlord to supply a statutory declaration of rent on August 31. 1939. No landlord may refuse to let a house because a prospective tenant has a child. It will be an offence to inquire whether a prospective tenant has a child or whether it is intended that a child shall live in the dwelling. The regulations will be applied immediately to New South Wales at the request of the State Government. The Federal Government hopes that the new regulations will soon operate throughout Australia.
