PETAIN READY FOR PEACE
SAYS*U.S.A. SHOULD STAY OUT OF WAR BLAMES BRITAIN FOR PRESENT FKANCO-BRITISH RELATIONS. (Recd. 9.22 p.m.) Vichy, Sept. 28. “I am always ready to support President Roosevelt in any peace initiative the United States may start, and I know the Pope also wants peace,” said Marshal Petain to a neutral correspondent. "When the war ends the United States could make a formidable contribution to peace, provided she stays out of the war and preserves freedom of action. Britain’s relations with France are due to a succession of phychological errors for which Britain is to blame. She knew that France would never use armed forces against her. I am pledged not to use our planes, fleet or troops against Britain. Yet she attacked and is stilt attacking us. The R.A.F. is hammering our northern ports to dust.”— U.P.A.
