SELECTION IN WANGANUI THREE NOMINATION’S TO HAND POSTAL BAI,LOT NECESSARY Three nominations, including one woman, have been received for a candidate to contest the Wanganui seat on behalf of the New Zealand National Party at the next general election. Nominations closed on Saturday and were opened at a meeting of tile Wanganui branch committee last night. Those nominated were: MACLEAN, Mrs. Alice Kathleen, wife of Mr. A. H. Maclean, farmer. Wanganui. VEITCH, Mr. William Andrew, Khandallah. Wellington, a former M.P. for Wanganui and Cabinet Minister. IZARD Mr. Nowell Montgomerie, barrister and solicitor, Wanganui.

The secretary of the Wanganui branch of the party, Mr. A. R. Donaldson, .y.id last night that a postal ballot would be taken among financial members about 21 days hence, a.s provided for in the rules of the parly. In the meantime, Mr. Donaldson added, a meeting will be held at which each of the three persons nominated will give an address. This meeting will be open to financial members. Mr. W. A. Veitch Mr. Veitch was M.P. for Wanganui from 1911 to 1935, when he was defeated by the present member, Mr. J. B. F. Cotterill. who won the seat for the Labour Party. Born in Perthshire, England, in 1870 Mr. Veitch was a son of Mr. Stephen Veitch, a school teacher. He was educated in Perthshire and, after coming to the Dominion, served for 22 years in,the New Zealand Government Railways a.s a locomotive driver. He was president of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants from 1908 to 1912, and was subsequently president of the Railways Servants from 1908 to 1912. and was subsequently president of the Wanganui Harbour Board, and also the Wanganui River Trust and Domain Board. He is a foundation member of the Aramoho Boating Club. In 1917, while a member of Parliament, he contested the Wanganui Mayoralty. During his Parliamentary career he was Minisler of Labour. Mines and Transport in the Ward Government, from 1928 to 1930. In the Forbes Government he was Minister of Railways from 1930 to 1931.

Mr. N. M. Izard Born in Wanganui in 1907, Mr. Izard is a son of the late Mr. W. A. Izard and Mrs. Izard, College Street. He received his earlier education at Hurworth School, later continuing his studies at the Wanganui Collegiate School, whore ho became head prefect of Hadfield House. In 1926 he entered Cambridge University, England and gained his M.A. degree with honours in law. When 22 years of age he was called to the Bar at Inner Temple, London, and in 1929 returned to New Zealand, becoming associate to Mr. Justice Reed. He was later admitted as a barrister and solicitor in the Supreme Court of N°w Zealand and joined the firm of Marshall. Izard and Wilson. In 1937 he took up the practice of his profession in Christchurch but two years later left, there to rejoin the Wanganui firm of Marshall,' Izard and Wilson when his father’s health was causing anxiety. In 1936 he again visited England and appeared before the Privy Council as a barrister in the New Zealand appeal. Chapple v. Aotea Maori I.and Board. Mr. Izard brought his case to a successful conclusion. He is keenly interested in military affairs and is a second-lieutenant in the WellingtonWest Coast Regiment. Mrs. A. K. Maclean Mrs. A. K. Maclean has taken a prominent part in all women's organisations and has gained a wide knowledge of local body affairs. She is president of the Wanganui Mothers’ Helpers’ Society, and in addition is an executive member of the Women s War Service Auxiliary. She has given valuable service in this organisation since it was formed after the outbreak of the present war. Mrs. Maclean is also an active worker in the Plunket Society in Wanganui and is a member of the executive. She is a past president of the National Council of Women. At the municipal and local body elections last May, Mrs. Maclean stood for the Wanganui Hospital Board on the Citizens’ Committe” ticket jjnd, although not elected, polled 3456 votes and headed the list of unsuccessful candidates.
