THIRD ANNUAL MEETING GROWTH OF WORK. Mrs. A. H. Mac Lean presided at the annual meeting of the Wanganui Mothers' Helpers’ Society held on Friday in the Victoria League Rooms. Others present were Mesdames T. F. Latham, hon. secretary), C. S. Ryan (treasurer), C. R. White, F. C. Jannings, Deacon, E, Allan, F. C. Fantham, H. G. Carver, H. L. Williams, G. Nelson, Beck, C. A. Piper, S. Gibbons, Eide. After a few words of welcome the president congratulated the members on a very successful .year and spoke of the work of the society, saying that it was not a spectacular organisation, but one which works very quietly. As each year goes by the society is becoming better known. The secretary reported that it had been found necessary to employ three helpers this year. Appreciative letters from those helped were read, including one from a grateful father expressing thanks for the helper sent by the society and for the very efficient manner in which she had managed the home and children. The president expressed thanks to the secretary, Mrs. Latham, who so willingl.v and cheerfully under.akes the arranging of the duties of the helpers and places them in the various homes, also lo the capable treasurer. Mrs. C. S, Ryan, and Mr. Allan Brown, auditor. A girt box of Howers, was presented to Airs. Latham, a bouquet and spray of berries to Airs. Macuean, and similar sprays to Mrs. Ryan, Mrs. R. C. aeouiar, who entertained with delightful songs accompanied by .Miss Nellie Gamman; and to Mrs. Eide, who has resigned from the committee. Appreciation of Mrs. Eide’s work for the society was voiced by the president. Mrs. F. C. Jannings was responsible for the floral work. A vote of thanks was passed to the City Council for tram passes for the helpers. The following ollicers were elected:—Patroness, Airs. W. J. Rogers; presidem, Mrs. A. H. Mac Lean; vice-presidents, Mesdames F. C. Jannings, C. A. Piper and G. Nelson; secretary, Mrs. T. F. Latham; treasurer, -Mrs. C. S. Ryan; publicity, Mrs. C. R Whi. e. The committee was re-elected with the names of Mesdames E. Allan, Ft. G. Carver, 5. Gi'ooons and Deacon added The annual report presented by the president slated that the work has steadily grown now lhat the valuable help which the society supplies is better known. The homes in which our helper’s have rendered assistance, have been, almost without, exception, I he type oi home and family where our help was not only needed, but also very greatly appreciated, and this has been a great satisfaction to the committee, continued the report. We have been very pleased to welcome, during the year, six new members, and would like to extend oui membership still fur.her. We have endeavoured this year in view of the many calls being made on the public for patriotic purposes, to refrain from holding our usual street appeal, and to carry mi without restricting in any way our assistance lo mothers. We have to thank the Minister oi Internal Affairs for once more allotting us foil from the State Ari Umoi and the McCarthy Trust for a donation to the Mayor’s Relief Fund. These donations have assisted us lo end up the year in a satisfactory financial stale. Co-operation with the Hospital Board has enabled us to send help to those homes, where, without the board’s assistance, our finance might have been strained. During the year Miss Lynch re ■ signed from our staff and Mrs Wright was engaged in her place. We appreciate also the helpful cooperation of the Piess always so willingly given, and of various people interested in the society.
