MORE MEASLES CASES FROM WAIOURU

ARRIVAL IN WANGANUI NOW 65 SOLDIERS IN HOSPITAL Another 22 soldiers from Waiouru Military Camp, suffering from measles arrived in Wanganui yesterday by ambulance. There are now 65 soldiers in the Wanganui Public Hospital and the Taihape Hospital is full. Two marquees have had to be made use of at Wanganui to accommodate the soldier patients as the accommodation in the hospital wards is fully taken up. There are more than 200 patients receiving treatment at present. The two marquees, which have been loaned to the hospital by the. military authorities, have been pitched near the isolation block. When soldiers arrive in the Wanganui Hospital prompt steps are taken by the Wanganui Red Cross Society to provide them with certain extras, such as fruit and cake and to supply cigarettes and reading material. Each sub-centre of the society takes its turn in attending to these provisions. Several of the men. on arrival in Wanganui, were in possession of their pay. which had just been drawn. They promptly made arrangements with the managing-secretary of the hospital, Mr. L. V. Kerby, to bank the money.

Detailed planning has been done over more than a year to have in readiness emergency hospital accommodation at short notice in the Wanganui district. While the outbreak of measles at Waiouru is officially stated to be mild, adequate arrangements could be made at short notice to cope with a major epidemic
