SCREEN OF AIR BASES
AUSTRALIA PROTECTED Melbourne, July 31. The establishment by the Commonwealth of Australia of a strong screen of defence and reconnaissance air bases as a buffer against invasion is revealed by the Minister of Air, Mr. J. McEwen. New stations included both land and seaplane bases. While he could not indicate the location or extent of the chain of bases the Minister said their establishment was an important precautionary measure against the possibility of the unheralded entry of enemy forces into Australian waters. Aircraft, operating in these bases would make exceedingly hazardous any future operations by enemy raiders seeking to interfere with shipping.—U.P.A.
