SECOND FORDELL EWE AND RAM FAIR

AUCTIONEER’S REPORT

The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, report on the second Fordell Ewe and Ram Fair held at Fordell on Monday. There was a good attendance of buyers, many being present from the Taranaki and Rangitikei districts. We offered a yarding of 4000 mixed-age ewes and 200 Romney and Southdown rams.

The sheep yarded, on the whole, were not up to the quality of our first ewe fair, but we can report an almost total clearance under the hammer, with the prices of young ewes firm on recent sales, but the older ewes showed a decline in prices. Good two-tooth ewes made 29s to 325, four-tooth ewes to 26s 9d, four and six-tooth ewes to 255, 5-year ewes (worn mouths), 16s 6d to 18s. In the ram section we penned 200 Romney and Southdown rams, there being approximately 100 Southdowns and 100 Romneys. The Southdowns met with an excellent sale, while the Romneys were hard to quit. Two stud Southdown rams, on account of Nelson Hughes, realised 37 and 151gns. respectively, while the flock Southdown rams sold on his account averaged lllgns. Southdown rams on account of J. Blair and Sons made 5i to 10gns., on account of D. Henderson, Fordell, 6 to Bgns.. E. Darbyshire, Maxwell, 51 to 6gns., and A. Duncan, Fordell, 5i to 6gns. MANGAWEKA EWE FAIR RECORD SALE REPORTED The New Zealand Farmers’ Coop. Distributing Co., Ltd., report a record sale and a total clearance at Mangaweka on Tuesday. Buyers were in attendance from practically all over the North Island and the demand for the good lines of 5-year ewes was sustained right throughout the sale. Waikato buyers were down in strong force and secured the bulk of the yarding. Taranaki was also strongly represented; likewise Manawatu and Lower Rangitikei.
