MERCHANT SHIPS CONTEND WITH PLANES

TWENTY-SIX DESTROYED

[ British Official Wireless. ] RUGBY, Feb. 6. Up to Tuesday 26 enemy aircraft were destroyed by defensively-equip-ped merchant ships, stated the First Lord of the Admiralty, Mr. A. V. Alexander, replying in the House of Commons. He added that 15 more than that were probably destroyed, while 70 had been damaged. An Admiralty communique states that an enemy dive-bomber was shot down by the trawler Philomena when off the south-east coast yesterday. No ship of the convoy was lost or damaged, but the Admiralty announces that the trawler Tourmaline, one of the escorting vessels, was sunk.
