HO'tfE GUARD. PATEA, Feb. 7. A meeting of the Patea committee of the Home Guard was held on Tuesday- night, the Mayor presiding. Captain Barnes, Messrs. Roots, Broker, Mairs, Coad, Cunningham, Dr. Simmons and Major Beamish were also present. It was decided that the committee apply to the Borough and County Councils for £lO from each for the expenses for the guard. It was unanimously- resolved that Major Beamish's offer to assist Ord-erly-Officer R. S. Crawford and act as treasurer be accepted. Messrs. Roots, Broker. Mairs, Beamish and the chairman were appointed a finance committee with power to pay urgent accounts.

The chairman said it had been reported’to him that employees at the local freezing works had declined to join the Home Guard, as they were under the impression that the guard might he utilised to crush any- strike that might take place. It was decided to write to the local branch of the Freezing Workers’ Union, and state that the Minister of the Crown has specifically denied that the Home Guard would be utilised for any purpose other than the defence of the country,

Mr. Roots stated that the Rif* Club members were holding a shooting practice on Saturday when all members of the Home Guard would be welcome to take part. It was decided that it be a recommendation to headquarters that the armlet be worn at all times by the members of the guard, with the objetc of fostering recruiting. Mr. Roots reported that he had visited Whenuakura, where several members had beer enrolled. A meeting had also been held at Alton, where additional members had been also enrolled. The chairman stated that he had seen a paragraph stating that a physical instructor had been appointed to train Home Guardsmen in the area from the northern boundary of the Patea Borough. He had written and asked what had been done as far as Patea was concerned.

The matter of the Founder's Day service was discussed with the Boy Scouts’ Committee at a meeting of the Patea Girl Guides, and it was decided that the service should be held in the Anglican Church on a Sunday in February at 3 p.m. It was hoped that the Rev. Farr and Rev. W. Henderson would combine with Rev. W. Walton in taking the service. Advice was received from headquarters regarding the Girl Guide field day, to be held at Stratford on Saturday, March 15. Arrangements in connection with transport to this event was left in the hands of the secretary, Mrs. F. W. Hamel. The question for the material for the making of clothes for refugee children was brought before the meeting, and the matter was left in the hands of "the president and secretary. PATRIOTIC QUEEN CARNIVAL. Opaku is to combine with Whenuakura and join in with Patea district in activities in connection with the Taranaki Queen Carnival. This was decided at a meeting at Whenuakura on Wednesday evening, which was called for the purpose of discussing the Patea Patriotic Committee’s effort to establish competition between Patea district queens. The winning queen will then represent Patea in the Taranaki Queen Carnival. Mr. F. Parsons presided and the following carnival committee was elected:—Chairman, Mr. F. Parsons; deputy chairman, Mr. D. Loftus; secretary, Mr. J. E. Wynne; treasurer, Miss Baker; committee, Mesdames T. Hurley, G. Hurley, W. Williams, Parsons, Brennan, W. E. Barnes S. Souness, Miss P. and M. Hurley, and D. Barnes; Messrs. C. Honeyfield, F. Souness, D. Loftus, W. Brennan, T. Hurley, J. Prout, J. Sheahan, E. and M. Williams. Miss Patricia Hurley was elected Queen for Whenuakura and Okahu.
