ON TRENTHAM TRACKS RAIN ON SATURDAY TRAINING OPERATIONS

The breaking of the drought was welcome at Trentham on Saturday morning, though it meant working the horses in a steadily-increasing dowrpoun. The rain not only showed no sign of ceasing when the work was completed, but. it was evident that it •had set in for the day. or for most of it at least. As a consequence the trial grass, which, along with the course proper, has been, kept easy by continuous watering, was soon very greasy, writes “Rangatira" in the Evening Post. Enrich (K. A. Carlyle) was the first out, and he ran away from Blue Border (R. Bishop) over the closing stage of seven furlongs in Imin. 284 sec,, the last half-mile in 514 sec. Enrich is to run in the Cup, as he was trained for the Derby distance prior to going to Ellerslie, and his connecItions consider his weighting for this 'race is more favourable than it was for the open sprint. N.Z. Cup Winner. Serenata (K. Smith), who has taken off surplus condition quickly with a couple of gallops, was always in front of Beau Vite (A. Foster) and widened the gap to four lengths at the end of a smart mile in Imin. 414 sec., the last half-mile in 50Jsec. There was a big difference in the weight, but the mare worked really well. | Gladynev (T. Biggs) and The | Monarch (K. Mallows) did a couple of rounds of pacing, taking 2min. 7sec. for the last mile and 43sec. for the | last three furlongs. Gladynev has been [ muscle-sore, but is loosening up now. He has joined H. B. Lorigan’s stable and will run in the Cup in the interests of his late owner’s trustees. The only other Cup acceptor on the track was Schoolgirl, who was ekpt to pace work. None of the open sprinters, except Kentucky, is yet on the X- ’ne, and Kentucky, who was not galloped, is more likely to contest the Wellington Stakes on Thursday.

Smart Two-year-olds. Par Avion (P. Williams), appreciating the easier going, caught and passed Pay Roll (W. J. Evans) at the end of half a mile in 49sec. Pay Roll once again showed a dislike for a shifting surface, though she produced her usual early brilliance. Erinscourt (Evans), though still a neck behind, was running on better than Corn Prince (Williams) at the end of half a mile in 49sec. Kevin (Smith) beat The Whipper (E. Pedley) by a length over three furlongs in 36sec. Eastern Sport (R. Barrott) was a length too good for Trevi (Biggs) over five furlongs in Imin. 4sec., the last half-miie in 504 sec. Gunyah (Barrott), jumping off at the six furlongs instead of the halfmile, ran the distance in Imin, 21sec., but was easing up to take 56sec, for the last half-mile. Foreign Coin did three-quarter pace only. Salutation did similar work, taking 47sec. for three furlongs. Prince Plato was also out on the track. Siglow (Carlyle) ran seven furlongs in Imin. 29Jsec., the last half-mile in' 524 sec. He was picked up at the five furlongs by Parchment (Bishop ) y who beat him home by a couple of lengths, handling the going well. Titter (Barrott) and Sir Reynard (Biggs) went five furlongs in Imin. 3sec., the last half-mile in 50sec. War Cloud (P. Burgess) and Sunee (J. Nicolson) did six furlongs in Imin. 20isec., the last half-mile in 54sec. Daljarrock (A. Sagar) beat the three-year-old Lackham—Degage gelding (F. Boyer) over three furlongs in 38sec. Not Out (S. Green) ran an easy half-mile in 56sec., and was making a bit of noise at the end of it. Good Sun took Imin. 24sec. for six furlongs. Maharajah (J. Garth) and First Round (N. Vaughan) went five furlongs in Imin. SJsec., the last halfmile in 55sec. Red Dasn (Garth) and Locrain (Vaughan) traversed six furlongs in Imin. 201 sec., the final halfmile in 53sec. Phyto lPedley), with a decided advantage in weight, was finishing on a length clear of Great. Night (J. Hayes) at the close of six furlongs in imin. 17sec., the last half-mile in 52 sec. Namesake (Smith) went attractively over half a mile alone in 49sec.

JOCKEYS AT TRENTHAM RIDING ENGAGEMENTS Further riding engagements for the Trentham meeting a£e:—A. Midwood, Enrich; P. Burgess, War Cloud; S. A. Waddell, Par Avion; H. P. Stewart, Corn Prince; H. N. Wiggins, Pay Roll; L. J. Ellis, Circular Note; N. Vaughan, First Round; F. Boyer, Royal Vision, A. Sagar, Sunee; S, Green, Gold Nugget, Salutation (probably); J. Hayes, Namesake; R. Barrott, Parchment, Eastern Sport; P. Al kins, Kathbella, Siglow (probably).

ON WANGANUI TRACKS TRENTHAM CANDIDATES

SATURDAY’S GALLOPS Following the long spell of dry weather the Wanganui tracks are very hard, and it will take more rain than fell on Saturday to take the sting out of them. Fortunately for Trentham candidates, those from Wanganui will leave to-day to do their final work-outs there to-morrow,’ and as lire Trentham tracks are reported to be in splendid order alter three monins' watering, together with rain 'on Friday and Saturday, they should not be troubled about hard tracks. The Wanganui horses galloped on Saturday morning and all appear to be in excellent order for, We:«figton. In addition, several that are going to Ashhurst may find the tracks easier before Anniversary Day. The pegs were about 20ft. out on the coursi proper on Saturday. Sir Beau was not fully extended in a spin over four furlongs, which he covered in 53sec., but he does not appreciate hard tracks. Sir Beau is engaged in the Telegraph Handicap

and the Wellington Stakes on Thursday, and there is a cnance that he will take on the latter event instead o£ the open sprint. Probably a decision will not be arrived at till the day of the race. Belle Cane, who is to fulfil her Cup engagement on Thursday, was sent over six furlongs, Miss Leighon being given a break of a couple of lengths in an endeavour to give the Beau Pere filly a strong work-out. It did not take Belle Cane long to get on terms with her companion, and in spite of the fact that she was covering a good deal of extra ground she finished on nicely to register Imin. 17 3-ssec. for the six furlongs. Belle Cane cannot. be discarded on her Auckland failures, for she was only a head behind Beau Leon, who was third in the Derby, and a repetition of her Manawatu Cup form would enable her to be in the money. Globe Trotter, who had shaped well in a spin over a mile with Belle Cane on Thursday morning, worked well lor a circuit, running Home from the I three-furlong peg in 40sec. The Safari gelding has come on well since his tall at Marton, and he looks like being troublesome on the later days at Trentham. Amigo is on a mark in the Wellington Cup that should enable him to run I one of his best ’ races of his useful career. He was sent a mile by himself on Saturday, with K. Chote up, and he “broke” Imin. 45sec. in spite of being wide out on the track. Provided he can be kept under restraint in the early stages on Thursday's Cup race—and he is easier to manage these days l—he should be able to produce a fine finishing run. Dwyer leaves for Trentham to-day with Sir Beau, Belle Cane and Globe Trotter, and Mr. L. H. Paul will take Amigo down to-morrow. Ringcraft slipped over three fur-' longs in 3Ssec., taking 12sec. for the first furlong, and he appears likely to carry on with his good form when produced at Ashhurst next week. ; Homily and Dynasty were com- | panions in a working gallop over i seven furlongs, taking Imin. 36sec. j Homily will probably make her next appearance at Hawe'ra next month, but Dynasty will take on the Ashhurst [Cup.
