EMPRESS OF RUSSIA
LIKELY TO BECOME AN AUXILIARY CRUISER HI NT FOR THE RAIDER MANILA. Dec. 2. Travellers from Hongkong said the British Government requisitioned the Empress of Russia last week. Before sailing she unloaded all passengers. It is reported that the ship will be used as an auxiliary cruiser for hunting the German raider in the South Pacific. The Empress of Russia is very fast, but is not armoured. However. United States naval experts think she could be heavily armed with 4-inch guns, by means of facilities in Hongkong, within two weeks. The Empress of Russia, owned by Canadian Pacific Steamships, Ltd., is a 27-year-old vessel of 16,800 tons.
