HASTINGS, July 31. The strongest market of the season for beef cattle prevailed at the Stortford Lodge sale to-day, when prices rose still further on those of last week. Competition was keen for a short yarding of ox beef, which made close on 45s a 1001 b. One quality lot realised £ll 17s 6d. Heifers made the dearest buying of the day at fully 46s a 1001 b. No extra prime pens were offered, the tops being all good butchers’ sorts, which sold at prices ranging from £ll 2s 6d to £l2 12s 6d. The cow pens were mixed in quality, but were easily traded in the strong market. All pens that were of fair quality made 40s and more a 1001 b. Breeding cows and weaner steers in the store section made the season’s highest values. Rising three-year Aberdeen Angus steers in good order sold at £9. Well-bred in-calf A.A. cows in firstclass order sold at £6 ss. The £4 mark was topped for the first time this season for weaner steers, when a gooddoing line made £4 ss. The rising two-year steers were small to medium-grown sorts only. The better lines made £5 15s and the lighter £5 2s 6d to £5 ss. High values also ruled for store sheep, which were 10s a head dearer than six to seven weeks ago. Fairmouthed five and six-year ewes made 255. Inferior six-year ewes sold well at 18s 6d. Medium-grown woolly ewe hoggets brought from 26s 9d to 28s 3d and pens shorn as lambs 25s 9d. Medium-grown woolly ewe hoggets brought from 26s 9d to 28s 3d, and pens shorn, as lambs 25s 9d . Mediumgrown woolly wether hoggets realised 20s 9d.
