SUCESS OF W. J. BROUGHTON

MUDFORD BEST APPRENTICE Unless the Christchurch Hunt Club meeting on Saturday is to be taken into account for the 1939-40 racing season’s statistics, the figures new standing for the jockeys’ premiership may be accepted as final. At any rate, the positions of the leaders cannot be affected, as W. J. Broughton heads the list with 59 wins, though he was not successful last week-enu at Marton. B. H. Morris, who roae cue winner on Saturday and then suffered a fall which resulted in a fractured collar bone, is next on the list with 54 successes. Third place is filled by H. N. Wiggins with 4i wins. In the past four years Broughton has been among the most successful riciers in the Dominion. He topped the list in the 1936-37 season with 63 wins, being 13 ahead of C. G. Goulsbro and 19 in front of L. J. Ellis. Brougntoa rode 51 winners in the following season to be fourth to L .J. Ellis <B9l, C. G. Goulsbro (72), and B. H. Morris (59), but he was again the leader last year, when he piloted 80 winners. He finished 16 wins ahead of Wiggins, 30 in front of G. R. Tattersall, and o 3 ahead of B. H. Morris.

VV. J. Mudford, who comes out of his time in October, is by far tiie most successful apprentice in the Dominion this season. With 44 victories, he is 18 wins ahead of E. V. Dye, with S. Waddell and W. F. Ellis the best of the other apprentices. The table of leading jockeys for tne season now ending is as follows:
