TREE-PLANTING CEREMONY A pleasant ceremony took place on Wednesday afternoon with the planting of ornamental trees along the lane adjoining the gasworks in Wellington Road. This beautifying work was instigated by Mr. W. G. Tolley, senr., who. assisted by a small band of enthusiasts, was instrumental in prepar- . ing the ground for the occasion. Mr. Tolley has also done much beautifying work voluntarily in other parts of the borough. The area planted » out, formerly

known as gasworks reserve, will henceforth be known as the Kain Memorial Avenue, in memory of Fly-ing-Officer Kain, New Zealand's first art of the war. When the 40 flowering cherry trees planted are in blossom, with their background of native trees and bamboos, what has hitherto been an eyesore will be a place of beauty and restfulness. Trees were planted in turn by the Mayoress and councillors’ wives, followed by the Mayor (Mr. F. Purnell), councillors, ex-councillors and others present. Each will have her or his name attached to the tree and all the names will be entered in a book as a lasting record. After the planting ceremony those taking part adjourned for afternoon tea, where a very pleasant social hour followed.
