INCREASED PRIMARY PRODUCTION

EXTRA STORAGE REQUIRED MARTON, July 31. That farmers are exercised over ihe call for increased primary production was demonstrated at Tuesday’s meeting at Marton of the Wellington Central Provincial executive of the Farmers’ Union when several phases of the question were debated. Mr. D. G. Gordon (Taihape), provincial president, stated that in going about the district and organising for increased production he haa found considerable doubt expressed about the proposals. He, with others, had been advising farmers to grow rape and barley for fattening stock and he was wondering now whether they had done .he right thing. Taihape farmers had asked him to propose the following resolution; “In view of the present drive for increased production the Minister of Marketing be asked for an .insurance that the produce will be purchased and sufficient storage accommodation provided for it.” Unless t he Minister could give that assurance, that there would not be a hold-up in March and April next, it would be very much better to urge farmers to grow hay and turnips to enable them to hold the stock in the autumn. “We /eel that there is lacking very necesI sary information on these points and 1 have been asked to endeavour to lind out where we stand,” he said. Mr. J. B. S. Dudding (Marton) seconded the motion and said that farmers had been asked to produce heavier lambs. This, he claimed, would lead to all the lambs coming on the market at the one time. He agreed that there was need for an assurance that the produce would be purchased and that ample storage space would be available. The motion was carried unanimously.
