GIRLS' COLLEGE
DRAMA COMPETITIONS SIX ONE-ACT PLAYS PRESENTED The Wanganui Girls' College pupils held their annual drama competition on Monday and Tuesday evenings, when six one-act plays were staged by the various houses, three on Monday and three last night, to an appreciative audience of pupils, members of the staff and friends. Except that the plays were chosen by the leaching staff, the girls were entirely responsible for the production, arrangement of scenery and costuming. It was evident that the young competitors had put in a great deal of preparation, as the performers were thoroughly conversant with their parts, and many of them showed considerable talent in their characterisations. The two winning plays will be presented at a concert to be given early next week by the pupils. The judge was Mrs. T. L. Sperring, woo gave helpful criticisms in the matter of speaking, gesture, grouping, tne telling points of the subtleties of producing and the necessity of watching the small but important details. During the intervals the school orchestra played selections and was accompanied by a chorus of voicus when the music of the song “There’ll Always Be An England’’ was playect. The plays, of which there was every variety, were given by the pupils of the following houses: Norfolk, Lincoln, Devon, Warwick, Somerset and Surrey. A play presented by Somerset House was awarded first place with 591 points out of 60, Surrey House
was second with 54 points and Lincoln House was third with 53 points. The plays were judged by Mrs. Sperring.
