QUEENSLAND SUGAR

SOME RECENT PURCHASES The British Food Ministry has agreed to take 500,000 tons of raw sugar from the 1940-41 Queensland crop, according to an announcement made recently by the Australian Minister of Customs, Senator McLeay. In making the purchase, however, it has been stipulated by the Ministry that the purchase should be distributed between the United Kingdom, Canada, and New Zealand. The present plan was that 300,000 tons should go to the United Kingdom. 120,000 to Canada, and the remaining 80,000 tons to New Zealand. There were doubts, said Senator McLeay, whether it would be possible for sufficient shipping to be made available to carry as much as 500,000 tons of the 1940-41 crop overseas. This follows an announcement in Wellington recently by the Premier of Queensland, Mr. W. Forgan Smith, that New Zealand had become a party to the British Empire scheme for the I purchase and distribution of sugar.
