LIQUOR SOLD AT EXHIBITION
THREE MEN HEAVILY FINED j “THE REAL STUFF” ON TAP j WELLINGTON, April 13. | Drunken men seen in the vicinity of a Centennial Exhibition stall selling “Centennial shandy” and “Centennial beer” roused police suspicion, and the outcome was a raid resulting in the appearance in the Magistrate’s Court of Joseph Francis Aspell, stall manager, Ronald Simpson, stallholder, anti Ezra Brown, attendant, on charges of breaking the licensing laws. Aspeil, for keeping liquor for safe j 4i a no-licence district, and Simpson ; for selling liquor in a no-licence ais- : trict, were each convicted and fined i £l2 10s. Brown, for selling, was r?ned £5. The police said drunken men were ( noticed near the Exhibition beer bar. Two constables went there and . bought ordinary beer, paying sixpence a handle for it. The bar was found to be equipped with two oeer pumps, one containing “Centennial shandy” and j the other containing “real stuff.” |- Inquiries revealed that 328 gallons
i ' of beer had been bought, sometimes two eight-gallon barrels being used in a day. Counsel for defendants said they nad been watering the beer down to 3 per .cent, with lenomade or water. If lemonade were added the mixture was ["Centennial shandy "; if waler, "Centennial beer."
