The Wanganui Chronicle TUESDAY, MARCH 26, 1940. ITALY’S ATTITUDE
ITALY’S attitude toward Great Britain’s exercise of belligerent rights against neutrals is that of straining at a gnat and swallowing a camel. Germany is submarining neutral ships, including Italian vessels, and leaving the crews to the mercy of the elements, while the offence of Great Britain is that she is detaining Italian vessels for search, which involves the loss of a few hours. The difference in treatment by the belligerents cannot be the subject of argument, for if Italy were really concerned to enforce respect for international law she would be so fully occupied in making protests to Berlin that she would have little time to spare for protests against those delays which have been caused by Great Britain. It would be very difficult for Italy to urge upon Germany a greater respect for international law, for if such an exercise were indulged in Herr Hitler would observe, should he. decide to use a homely phrase, that it was a case of the Italian pot calling the German kettle black.
