OHAKUNE NOTES

FAREWELL EVENING AT HOROPITO. (Own Correspondent.) A very enjoyable social and dance was held in the Horopito Hall last evening in honour of Privates E. Galvin and C. Watson, who are leaving shortly for service overseas in the Second Echelon. A record crowd of residents of Horopito and surrounding districts gathered together to farewell these two local men. During the course of the evening, which was enlivened by dances and items, a presentation was made to each guest of honour in the form of a fountain pen and wallet containing bank notes, by Mr. I. Haining. Brief speeches were made by each recipient, after which those assembled accorded the guests musical honours. A dainty supper was supplied by members of the ladies’ committee. OHAKUNE CYCLE RACE. The Ohakune cycle races were held in brilliantly line weather with a distance of three laps. There were nine starters and the results were as follow: —T. O'Connell, 26min. lOsecs., 1; M. McDowell, 27mins. Usees., 2; H. Menzies, 25mins. 42secs., 3. Also started: B. Rush, D. Crowley, H. Blinkhorne, R. Lloyd, K. Herdman, L. Herdman did not finish. Points for the six races held so far this season:—H. Menzies, 17; R. Lloyd, 16; D. Crowley, 11; W. Rush, 10; M. McDowell, 7; T. O’Connell, 7; H. Blinkhorne 3; J. Rush, 3; L. Herdman, 2; M. Wright, 1. Considerable interest is taken in the cycle races and it is interesting to see how the competitors stand as regards points. OHAKUNE FIGHTING SERVICES WELFARE APPEAL. Recently representatives of the Wanganui area of the Fighting Services Welfare Appeal, Colonel TurnbuT. and Mr. Wells, met members of the Ohakune Patriotic Committee to arrange for the collection in regard to the appeal which is sponsored by the Y.M.C.A. and Salvation Army for comforts and huts for New Zealand soldiers at the war. Subsequently, at the request of the Mayor of Ohakune, Mr. H. Delamar, collectors were appointed to cover the borough of Ohakune, Rangataua and the Ohakune riding of the Waimarino County. The national appeal closed on March 16, 1940. On Tuesday evening a meeting of the Ohakune Patriotic Committee was held in the Scout Hall, when there was a record attendance. His Worship the Mayor, Mr. H. Delamar, presided and announced that the sum of £5l Os 6d had been collected. Mr. Delamar, in speaking, thanked those who had so willingly contributed to this worthy cause. People in the district seemed to be taking a great interest in the welfare of New Zealand soldiers. It was decided at the meeting to hold a. public farewell on Wednesday to the local men of the second echelon. It is anticipated that there will be a capacity house. OHAKUNE BOWLING During the week-end the Ohakune Club received a visit from the Victoria Bowling Club, of Wanganui, when friendly games were indulged in. At the conclusion of the day, Mr. W. J. Watson, president of the Ohakune Club, thanked the Victoria Club for its visit and the enjoyable games played. Mr. Smithies, president, returned thanks. The games had been close and the friendly spirit that prevailed made the day a most enjoyable

RED CROSS SHOP On Thursday, March 28, there is to be a “bring-and-buy” shop held in the new shop next door to T. Chan’s, in aid of the Red Cross funds. A special effort is -being made and the town ladies are asked to make their purchases of farm produce and the country ladies are asked to buy goods supplied by the town ladies. OHAKUNE SCHOOL SPORTS On Thursday, March 28, the annual athletic sports meeting arranged by the Ruapehu Primary Schools’ Sports Association will be held at Rochfort Sports Ground, Ohakune Junction. This year competitors have entered from Ohakune, Raetihi, Rangataua, Karioi, Umumuri and Mangaeturoa Schools and the number of individual entries is larger than ever. The sports are timed to start at 10.30 a.m. and it is hoped that as many parents as possible will make a picnic day of it and attend the function. Hot water will be provided. Owing to the Railway Department being unable to run a special train as was done previously special transport arrangements have been made with Webb’s Motors to transport the Raetihi, Umumuri and Mangaeturoa competitors and others by buses leaving Raetihi School at 9.30
