APPRAISEMENT OF WANGANUI WOOL

START ON MONDAY NEXT VALUERS DELAYED ELSEWHERE PORTION OF GROSS PRICE TO BE WITHHELD. Because the work of appraising wool in various centres of the Dornin- I ion for sale to the United Kingdom Government under the war commandeer has become very strenuous, the time-table governing the itinerary of the valuers has had to b-.; changed. The Wanganui Woolbrokers’ Association received advice yesterday morning that the valuers, who were to have begun their appraising in Wanganui to-day, will not be arriving until Sunday and will be ready to start work on Monday. 5 Per Cent To Be Withheld. An important announcement has been made by the Minister of Agriculture, Hon. W. Lee Martin, that a contingency fund is to be establishes to enable the whole of the clip in the Dominion to be sold to the Britisr. Government at not more than ail over-all price of 12.188 a lb. To guan’, against errors in valuing, 5 per cem. of the gross proceeds of each sale to be withheld in the meantime. Thu, will be placed in a suspense account and, if all goes well, will be distributed to growers at the end of the season. This decision overcomes a. difficulty foreseen by Wanganui wool brokers, who were of opinion that prices would be on a conservative basis in the meantime and that a bonus payment would be made late;- if it was found that the over-all average price of the New Zealand clip worked out at less than 12.188 d. A Difficult Task. Even the layman can appreciate the difficult task set the appraisement committee to give prices, varying according to the quality of the wool and its yield, and arrive at an over-all average of 12.188 d for the season. To overcome that difficulty the payouts, which are to take place 14 days after sale, will be on a basis of 5 per cent, less than the scheduled price, and the grower will get a bonus payment at the end of the season according to how near the appraisement committee has been in estimating the the proportion of good wools and bad in the Dominion. Range of Prices, The Auckland Woolbrokers' Association has released for publication the range of prices set by the appraisers under the commandeer. Tne payment in each case is expected to be five per cent, less than the amounts a s published. They appeared in yesterday’s “Chronicle.” Last year the average price obtained in Wanganui for wool was 9.031'cl a lb. The bulk ot the wool sold at Wanganui is crossbred, ranging in counts from 44 to 48.
