TOWN AND COUNTRY MATCH AT WELLINGTON CITY ELEVEN'S LEAD SEIENTH-WICKET STAND [ Per Trees Association.] WELLINGTON, Dec. 6. Tne first day’s play in the annual Town v. Country cricket, match wa,s greatl}' in favour of the City eicven. Taking first strike on a perfect wicket, the Town team scored 272 in the first innings, a spirited stand by E. (captain.: and D. 8. Wilson, which put on 86 for the seventh wicket, saving the day for the City team. V. H. Du Chateau and J. A. Ongley also made useful conti ibu I ions. Downes, the Manawatu fast lefthander, was the most sucessful bowler for Country arid he imparted some “devil” into nis deliveries in taking five wickets tor 44 runs off 12.1 overs. Pritchard, the Manawatu. Wellington and New Zealand fast bowler, kept a good lengih in taking three wickets lor 86 runs off 16 overs., C. Me Vicar (Manawatu) replaced M. Thomas (Hawke’s Bay) in the Country team. On going to tne wickets after the tea adjournment the Country team found the bowling oi Wilson, who took five wickets for 22 runs, too good for them, and when stumps were drawn at 6 o’clock eight wickets were down for 107 runs.
