POPLLAR TEACHER FAREWELLED (Own Correspondent) MANGAWEKA, Oct. 30. On Friday afternoon a large gathering of parents and members of the school committee gathered in the school grounds to bid farewell to Miss D. Howard, infant mistress, who is leaving to be married. The ladies provided a dainty afternoon tea, after which a presentation was made. Those who spoke of Miss Howard's good work during the past two years that she had been associated with the school were Mr. A. Lewis (headmaster), Mr. L. G. P. Mahoney, chairman of the school committee. Mr. G. N. Boulton also spoke. The children of the school presented Miss Howard with an electric iron and, on behalf of the school committee, Mr. Mahoney presented her with a hall mirror completed with hat brushes. Miss Howard suitably responded. MANGAWEKA 44.1. The October meeting of the Mangaweka Women’s Institute was well attended and was presided over by Mrs. Ince. The motto. "A Friend in Need is a Friend Indeed.’’ was given by Mrs. R. Mcßae, and the golden thread talks was continued with an article given by Mrs. F. Billinghurst and proved most interesting. During the afternoon the new programme for the ensuing six months was presented. A very pleasant interlude was an international exhibit from the Wanganui Federation, comprising of a globe and small figures dressed in the national costume of countries associated with the institutes and attached lo the country they represented on the globe by a ribbon. Interesting articles were read by six members on six of the countries illustrated on the globe. Two delegates were appointed lo attend the half-yearly meeting to be held in Ohakune. The competitions resulted as follow- —Vase of bulbs, Mrs. P-. Dickson 1, Mrs. H. Reilly 2. Mrs. S. Dickinson 3: premier flower, Mrs. H. Reilly 1, Mrs. J. Ince 2, Mrs. Billinghurst 3; trolly cover or tray cloth, Miss T. Crawford 1. Mrs. L. Mahoney 2, Mrs. G. Antvviss 3. Hostesses for the meeting wore Mesdames Stowers, Waugh, Dickson and Miss T. Crawford.
