FINE OF til FOR MAORI. RANGER PUSHED IN STREAM. . ROTORUA, Oct. 2S. I Fines and costs totalling £ll were imposed upon a Maori, Jim Wallace, who appeared in the Rotorua Magistrate's Court yesterday before Mr. S. L. Paterson. S.M., charged with takI ing trout out of season, and with obstructing a ranger in the execution of his duty. Wallace pleaded guilty to both charges. Mr. E. Roe. who appeared for the Department of Internal Affairs, said that on September 24. a ranger, Mr. Bell, had been patrolling the Utuhina Stream, and had come upon a group of men who appeared to be driving trout into a net set across the stream. Defendant gave a false name and refused to show the ranger his bag. A tussle then developed, during which trout fell from defendant’s bag. During the tussle defendant, a powerfully-built man, pushed the ranger into the stream. He then made off, but at. a later dale was recognised by the ranger
