ON AWAPUNI TRACKS

RANGITIKEI CANDIDATES TUESDAY’S GALLOPS. With Manawatu stables freely engaged at the Rangitikei Hunt meeting on Saturday there was a fair amount of interesting work at Awapuni on Tuesday morning. The course proper, with the flags well out, was available but the going was holding. The times were slow, but among the horses to go particularly well were Old Surrey. Catalogue and Raeburn, the Beau Pere’s La Bru and La Coquette, and Peach King. Vesty jumped the country, giving a very good exhibition of fast jumping. He is to race at Marton and it will be interesting to see how he shapes. Among those out doing pace work was Beaupartir, who has returned from his holiday in great order. He is big and he looks fresh and as if his spell has done him a world of good. Mi’lament has rejoined the active brigade, but Chevychase did not come through with the other two. One of the first to gallop was Onahau (E. Stewart) and he was timed to run five in 1.14, never being off the bit. Blue -Steel (S. Anderson) and Reawanoa <B. Brown) were together over a mile which took them 2.1 and Rollaway (B. H. Morris) and Patahi (J. Williamson) came home from the three in 424. Evening Glow (Williamson) and Manteau ' P. Jarvis) finished a length in front of Royal Choice ’B. H. Morris), covering five in 1.12. the last three in 43. Laughing Lass 'G. R. Tattersall) and The Bigot tB. H. Morris) are coming io hand quickly and they could have in.proved upon 57 for half a mile. Riotous and Hanover were worked at a good strong pace twice round, and Cuisiner (Temperton) with a pull in the weights was well clear of led Prior (B. Brown) at .he end of six in 1.27 2-5. Bridegroom <J. Chaplin) was kept to even time over a mile, and Stargono IP. Rae) jumped four schooling hurdles, getting in a bit close to the one against the difficult light. La Bru (Tattersall) and La Coquette (Broughton), both Ing fillies, sprinted three furlongs in 40 2-5. and they went particularly well. Disdain <B. H. Morris) started oft short of the six. but She was never going at any pace. Colibri (Broughton) worked over six and Aurora's Star (Temperton) over four, but neither was after time. Dawning Light (Tattersall’ was given time to find her feet and she came home the last three of seven in 44. Colonel Bogey (Broughton) was restrained to half pace, and Duncannon (Morris) ran three in 43 2-5. Old Bill, who might make a name for himself next season, was given an easy five, and Quadroon <M. Bowden) finished too well for Moradbad (Tattersall). beating her over four covered in 57 3-5. th- last two in 27 3-5. Vesty (K. Kanake) jumped the countrv. his task being over a post and rails, two brush fences and another post and rails. The first was against a bad light but he never put a foot wrong. At Marton he will be ridden bv Kanake or I. Rohloff. Catalogue (Broughton), after exei-,-ise in the "Bull Ring." galloped six furlongs with Raeburn <R. Ireland). They took 15 for the initial furlong and 43 3-5 for the first three. Raeburn momentarily looked like a winner. but Catalogue made a final “dab and they were on terms at the post, the time for the full distance being 1.26. Catalogue is now- getting more fast work and he should be near his best for the Winter Cup. Old Surrey (Ireland) covered the last five of six in 1.11, going strongly throughout. and Amyas Leigh (Broughton) was just in front of Inchkeith (Temperton) at the end of five in 1.14 2-5. Sporting Gift (Kanake). Debretts (V. Dyei and Israel (S. Waddell) ran four in 57sec. and Peach King (Tattersall) went particularly well over five in better than 1.10. Manawatu 'Broughton) and Power Chief 'lreland* were worked over seven, not being required to do better than even time. The Tiderace - Oreum ‘illy, who is a half-sister to Gold Rod. and the Bulandshar April Fool colt, the halfbrother to Beaupartir, were allowed to canter down the straight. They arc quality youngsters, the former being a chestnut and the latter a brow n. W. .1. Broughton's riding engagements for Marton are Kaiwaka, Liberal's Mint and Screen Star. G. R. Tattersall has been engaged for Evening Glow and Guiding Light and W. J. McDowell will ride Bing Boy if he starts.
