THE TURF

JUMPING DOUBLE ANOTHER SUCCESS FOR H. S. GREENE BETER BECKFORD AND RAPA WAIATA In winning at his first start over hurdles, at Gisborne recently, Peter Beckford made a good impression on keen observers, hnd this was fully borne out by his effort in taking the Hawkes Bay Hurdles, the feature event at the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club s second winter meeting on Saturday. His connections were confident of success after his good schooling last week and they were never in doubt about the win. The field ran along in very leisurely fashion for the first six furlongs until Small Boy pressed the Greenmeadows gelding. They soon had the field strung out and were well clear at the half-mile from Curie, who had displaced Iddo. Curie made a promising move as he jumped into second place over the penultimate obstacle, but Peter Beckford was still running on the bit and he drew out smartly to win pulling up. On the day he was a class above the opposition, and Curie beat Small Boy just as comfortably for second. The surprising feature of the race was the backing of Journet down to favouritism. He was last to the five furlongs, where he made a short run, hut he soon dropped into fourth place and did not improve any further. Iddo, who has done all his recent schooling over tall timber, jumped high throughout, and. as a result, lost a lot of ground at most of the fences. Stable Double Again Harry Greene, whose success with jumpers this season has been phenomenal. brought off yet another jumping double when he landed the June Steeples with Rapa Waiata, who carries the Peter Beckford colours. As on the opening day, Primak tried to force the pace, but Rapa Waiata and Glenvane were with him for the first mile and a half. From that stage Glenvane, a good favourite, was outjumped and the firstnamed pair clipped along at a good bat to the sod wall, half a mile from home. From this juncture Rapa Waiata gained a steady advantage, and he jumped the last fence better than Primak to go on to an easy win, though his rider took things a little bit easy over the concluding stages. Glenvane did not justify his backing down to favouritism. He did not jump well and it was only his pace on the flat that kept him in the picture. Wykemist was very ore and was pulled up six furlongs from home.
