MOTHERS’ HELPERS SOCIETY

WORK MUCH APPRECIATED. The monthly meeting of the Wanganui Mothers’ Helpers Society was held last Friday in the Victoria League Rooms. Those present were Mesdames A. H. McLean (president). T. Latham (secretary), C. S. Ryan (treasurer), Soundy, C. A. Piper, C. R. White, Eide, G. Nelson. Jannings, Fantham, Beck W. Ford. An apology was received from Mrs. Westwood. Mrs. C. S. Ryan was appointed as the society’s delegate to the National Council of Women. A letter of appreciation was received from one of the mothers who had had the society's helper. It was stated that help had been sent to nine new cases and besides the regular housekeeper, three emergency housekeepers had Io be engaged. Mrs. Latham reported that she had visited to whom the housekeepers had been sent. It has been proved that there is a definite need in the community for help for sick mothers and the Mothers’ Helpers Society which started with one housekeeper, has had to extend its scope of work to meet the demand. The finance side of this urgent work causes the society a great deal of concern and to continue to carry on it has been decided to hold a jumble sale at Castlecliff on Saturday, July 1, to help bring in much-needed revenue. It is hoped that the effort will be well supported. Various members have reported good responses to their appeal for clean, second-hand clothes. The society, which has almost completed its first year of work comprises a band of enthusiastic women who give time and energy to the cause and they do hope they will get enough public support and also many more subscribers, now that their work is well known. A member reported having received a beautiful bed jacket donated by a sympathiser, to he sold to assist the funds. The society was pleased lo enroll two new members. Mrs. W. M. Smallfield and Miss M. Hamilton. A vote of appreciation was passed to the secretary (Mrs. T. Latham*, for her great interest and the work that she had done.
