PROSPECTIVE UNEMPLOYMENT

IN RAETIHI (Own Correspondent). RAETIHI, June 17. [ At the last meeting of the Raetihi i Borough Council the following re;port was presented, showing the steps [being taken by the council to meet : the threatened unemployment issue: I A deputation from the Raetihi j Chamber of Commerce waited upon [the council in regard to the retaining lof the Public Works employees in it he district. The speaker, Mr. D. P. Scarfe, pointing out that it had come to their notice that as the work for these men was nearly completed they would be transferred from the district. Representation had been made to the Hon. R. Semple and the Hon. Lee Martin asking that a deputation be heard. This had been tentatively arranged for the week ending June 10 and the deputation asked that His Worship the Mayor or one other member of the council be delegated to act on the proposed deputation to the Government.

The speaker outlined the work on the Parapara Road which had been suggested to the Government as being necessary, which would utilise a great deal of Public Works labour and would thereby retain the men in the district. Councillor Shout referred to the continuation of Ameku Road as a further essential work which could be included. The Pipiriki Road was also stressed as an essential work. The council was fully sympathetic to the representations and accordingly made the following recommendations: 'l' That His Worship the Mayor or his nominee bo the council's representative to co-operate with the Traders’ Association in regard to this matter and also to comprise one of the deputation to wait, on the Government. (2) The town clerk was instructed to write to the Waimarino County Council and the Ohakune Borough Council asking for their co-operation RAETIHI PROPOSED RATES At the. monthly meeting of the Raetihi Borough Council the following summary of the proposed rates for the year *1939-40 was agreed upon. The general rate has been increased by Id in the £l. This increase is to be offset by a reduction in the conversion loan ra e of a like amount.
