MAIN NORTH ROAD
DEVIATION ON HILL REMOVAL OF DANGER SPOT WORK ON WHENUAKURA HILL Work is well advanced on the construction of a deviation to eliminate a narrow and winding section of roadway on the Whenuakura Hill on the main north highway between Wanganui and Patea. The section of road being eliminated was treacherous in wet weather and was the scene of a number of accidents. The top portion of the deviation is now in use while progress on the lower portion is well advanced. The deviation starts near the boundary of the Wellington and Taranaki provinces and proceeds down the hill almost in a straight line like the dash in a dollar sign. The new road, right from the top of the hill to the bridge, will be much wider than the old winding roadway and will speed up traffic and at the same time remove a danger spot. The work is being undertaken by the Public Works Department. At the present rate of progress it is expected that within the next two months the deviation will be finished and the new road sealed. It is understood that consideration will be given in the near future to the replacement of the narrow wooden bridge over the Whenuakura River.
