PRICE OF BUTTER
ADVANCE IN LONDON STOCKS BEING REPLENISHED Received March 6, 5.5 p.m. LONDON, March 5. After a period of inactivity the butter market has improved. Buyers taking advantage of the lower prices to replenish their stocks caused choicest New Zealand salted to improve to 116 s to 117 s per cwt. and exceptional lines made 118. Australian sold at 115 s and special lines at 116 s. Australian Production Australian butter production during the first six months of 1938-39 was 2,006,587 cwt. or 7 per cent, more than the production of 1,874,360 cwt. in the corresponding period of 1937-38. A bulletin relating to the dairy industry, issued in Canberra by the Commonwealth Statistician, Dr. Roland Wilson, shows that the increase in output was due chiefly to higher production in Queensland. Exports of butter during the six months ended December 31, 1938, were 1,060,948 cwt. — an increase of 35 per cent. O the total, 1,008,857 cwt., or 95 per cent., went to the United Kingdom. Shipments of cheese amounted to 173'346 cwt. .
