Mr. John Morrison, Wanganui, who has suffered a severe illness, was able to be about again yesterday and is much improved in health. The death occurred in the Wanganui Public Hospital yesterday of Mr. Herbert Steel Elgie, a stepbrother of Mr. W. J. Rogers, Mayor of Wanganui, after a long illness. Mr. W. J. Rogers, Mayor of Wanganui. left yesterday for Dunedin to attend the Municipal Conference there He was accompanied by Mr. C. R. White, chief clerk of the Wanganui City Council. Mr, J. Walton, who has been secretary of the Greymouth Fire Brigade lor 50 years and a past president of the United Fire Brigades Association of New Zealand, is visiting Wanganui for the conference of brigades. Mr. J. W. Hennan, Under-Secrc-tary of the Department of Internal Affairs, who has been visiting Wanganui for the annual conference of the United Fire Brigades’ Association of New Zealand, leaves for Wellington to-day. Regret that he was unable 1o attend the conference because of the municipal conference at Dunedin wa. conveyed in a letter from the Hon. W. E. Parry, Minister of Internal Affairs, received at yesterday’s conference of the United Fire Brigades' Association of New Zealand. Mr. G. F. M. Hall, till recently district representative for the Prudential Assurance Company, Ltd., in Hastings, has been promoted to the position of life branch agency supervisor for Hawke’s Bay and Poverty Bay, and has now taken up his residence in Napier. Mr. F. C. Cuming has been appointed to replace Mr. Hall as district representative in Hastings. Sympathy with Mr. R. Girling Butcher, Chief Government Fire Inspector, who is an inmate of a Wellington hospital, and E. J. Scantlebury Reefton, an ex-president, was ‘expressed at the annual conference of the United Fire Brigades’ Association of New Zealand at Wanganui yesterday. The Rev. F. J. Miles, D. 5.0., 0.8. E., general secretary of the Russian Missionary Society, will arrive in New Zealand on March 15 and will remain for two months. Mr. Miles was senior chaplain of the Australian Imperial Forces during the Great War, and was three times decorated for gallantry. He has occupied the position of president of the Christian Endeavour Union of Great Britain, and has occupied the leading pulpits throughout the country. Mr. Miles, who has travelled extensively, will lecture on Russian themes during his visit.
