“DIGGERS” AT BOWLS

A SUCCESSFUL TOURNEY OVER ONE HUNDRED ON THE GREENS . Twenty-eight rinks participated in the annual returned soldiers' bowling tournament on the St. John’s green on Saturday. Played in carefree "Digger" atmosphere, the tournament was a fresh success and the committee in charge and those engaged owed a great deal to the assistance of Mr. W. G. Herd and the St. John's Club. Mr. Herd made available his outstanding knowledge of tournament procedure and enabled the big entry to be handled without hitch. Mr. L. H. Bassett, president of the St. John’s Club, made the visitors welcome, and the president of the Wanganui R.S.A., Mr. W. H. Cannan, expressed thanks and appreciation to the St. John's Club for allowing its greens to be used and especially mentioned Mr. Herd. The day was as much a reunion as anything else and to adjust the draw to suit such an occasion many rinks were split up. That adjustment was taken in the friendly spirit of the day. It was not so much a case of winning as having an enjoyable game of bowls with "cobbers" of the war days. The rinks were all named with the names of battles and places now prominent in history, and the greens were appropriately beflagged. The winning rink was brought before the commanding officer (Mr. C. S. Brown) by the “guard" and the members were given the cup, which was well filled. The tournament was won by a rink skipped by Burns. The A section required a play-off between Toop's rink and Burns, three heads being played to find the winner. Burns won three to nil and played in the final against McCracken’s rink, which won the other section outright. In a test of five heads Burns beat McCracken 7-2. Details:—
