TOWED TO PORT

DISTRESSED SEALER OFF ST. LAWRENCE Received March 5. 7.30 p.m. ST. JOHNS. March 4. Captain John Babcock and his plucky crew of 131 won a stubborn struggle to save both the distressed sealer, s.s. Ranger, and themselves from the sea. They kept the vessel afloat for two days by furious bailing and the ancient, sealer was towed safely to harbour to-night at Trepassey. 81 miles south-west, of here, by the freighter Newfoundland and the Imogene. Even there the captain and crew refused to leave the Ranger. Although many of the fittings had been jettisoned in the fight to keep her afloat, they chose her sparce accommodation to get badly-needed rest. The Newfoundland left for St. Johns but the Imogene continued to stand by.
