“GAIETIES-OF 1939"

STANLEY McKAY’S SHOW [ OUTSTANDING FIRST NIGHT Brilliant comedy, outstanding specialty acts, lavish scenes set off by | haunting music, combined to make Stanley McKay's "Gaieties of 1939," which opened a season at the Opera House last night, one of the most entertaining shows to visit Wanganui. comedy of the shosy, which is one of its main attributes, is headed by Mr. Stan Foley, one of the most sought after Australian vaudeville comedians, who last night kept the "house” in an uproar of mirth, whenever he appeared. He receives valuable support in the humorous sketches from Mr, Scotty McKinnon, Mr. Max Reddy, Miss Dolly Donoghue, and Mr. George Corelli. Among the sketches which proved most popular last night were “At Your Service," “In Fearless Foley’s Flat,” and “Come Into the Garden, Maud." An effective sketch is "The Island Tragedy,” in which the sombre atmosphere is eventually lifted

and comedy predominates in the end. A bracket of attractive violin solos |is played by Elvy, a rather charming (young lady, and there are various vocal numbers in which soloists are assisted by May Brookes’ orchestra, which provides the incidental music throughout the performance. The ballet contributes a great deal of hard work to the show, and probably finds its most effective opportunity in the song scena, '.'Old Fashioned Memor|ies,” in which the vocal parts are (taken by Miss Stella Collier and Mr. ; Barry Ross. i The “Gaieties of 1939” will be presented again to-night, at a special jmatine" with reduced admission fees ito-morrow, and with a complete I change of programme to-morrow ‘ night.
