FITNESS WEEK

WANGANUI CAMPAIGN APPEAL BY THE MAYOR An appeal to all Wanganui citizens to support Physical Fitness Week was made during the week-end in the form of an open letter signed by the Mayor, Mr. W. J. Rogers, and the town clerk, Mr. G. Murch, as chairman and secretary respectively, ol the Physical Fitness Campaign Committee. The letter, which is directed particularly to the attention of sports organisations, reads:— “We are asking for the attendance of your club members in a gigantic procession and electric light display on Thursday, February 23, from the Town Bridge to Cook's Gardens. “This effort is to encourage ail our young people to become more 'physically minded’ than they are at present. All clubs are asked if they will persuade their members to parade in playing attire and equipment, with emblems of their sport and banners if possible. “We appeal for a good representation from bands, cadets, territorials, colleges, secondary and primary schools, employees of firms, friendly societies, sports bodies, and clubs of all kinds, who will be willing to cooperate to make this display worthy of our city.” It is proposed that the procession start at the lower end of the Avenue at 7.30 p.m. and proceed to Cook's Gardens, via the Avenue and Guyton Street, where a mass display by all sports bodies will take place. At Cook's Gardens the programme will include a march past, a massed display, separate demonstrations, races and games, competitions and dancing. In order to make arrangements, the committee desires the whole-hearted co-operation of every sports organisations, both winter and summer. The secretary of the special sub-committee responsible was particularly desirous that all branches of sport be represented, and would be pleased if secretaries of clubs would communicate with members of the committee. Already many organisations have been approached, and their willingness to assist has been most encouraging to the committee. The City Council Chambers are the headquarters of the campaign and members of the special sub-committee are: Messrs.- A. C. Bourgeois (“Chronicle”), W. J. Robinson (Londontown), A. L. Rounthwaite (Y.M.C.A.). and Capt. J. W. Barry (Defence Dept.).
