Model For Coming Nelsons

LIVERPOOL Representing Lord Nelson in his uniform as Admiral of the Fleet, a new figurehead now stands proudly forward from the bows of the historic Conway, training ship for cadets of the Merchant Marine and the Navy. Fittingly it was Mr John Masefield, Poet-Laureate famed for his poems of the sea. who unveiled the figurehead at the “masting” ceremony at the landing stage here. The PoetLaureate was himself a cadet on the Conway as a boy, and it was on the decks of this ship that he first added the lore of the sea to his love of the sea. The figurehead is 14 feet long. It is carved in Burma teak, painted in rich heraldic colours, and is the work of Mr E. Carter Preston of Liverpool. Unveiling of the figurehead represents the completion of yet. another stage in the reconditioning of the Conwafy. When this is finished the 100-year-old vessel is to be “as good as new,” and would be quite able to put to sea. The reconditioning has been made possible by the generosity of the merchant marine profession. Cutting “My best man dined with us last Sunday and was so impressed with my bride’s cooking that he sent her a carving set. ’ ’ ‘ 4 That was nice. ’ “Not so very. He sent her three chisels and a mallet.” Crystal Clear Mr Perks decided to give himself a present. “I want a pair of spec-rimmed horrifies, ” he told the proprietor of the shop he entered, “I mean sporn-rimmed rimmed spectacles—er—l ought to say heck-rimmed spornacles.” “I know exactly what you mean,” said the shopkeeper. “Mr Johnson, show Mr Perks some rimmed-horn hectacles.”
