AMIGO GETS AWAY

Distressed After Long Gallop WANGANUI OPERATIONS HORSES FOR OPUNAKE AND HAWERA Claiming engagements at Hawera next week in the Flying Handicap and the Egmont Cup, Amigo went out to do pacework on the inside track on Wednesday morning but got away with his lightweight rider and went three circuits before he could be pulled up. The Beau Pere gelding was very distressed when he was once more under control, and he had cut himself on a leg in negotiating the corners at high pace. Yesterday he appeared to be making a good recovery from his escapade, and as he has practically a week in which to get over it he may be able to fulfil his Hawera engagements. After his good displays at Awapuni, Marton and Trentham it appeared likely that Amigo would play a prominent pari in the autumn racing campaign, and if he gets over the effects of this escapade he should be in the picture again. Several Wanganui horses engaged at Opunake and Hawera were sent along yesterday morning, when tracK and weather conditions were satisfactory. Homily, who is engaged in the Egmont Cup next Thursday, shaped pleasingly over six furlongs. With F. Latham in the saddle she took a shade under 51sec. for the initial halfmile and took Imin. 17 3-ssec. for the full distance. Usually the Posterity filly is rather sluggish when working alone, but yesterday’s display was very satisfactory. Entail (W. Rayner) took Imin. 4 3-ssec. for five furlongs, not being bustled over the concluding stages after the first two furlongs had been left behind in 25sec. Entail is to run in the seven-furlong open events al Hawera next week.

Rayner gave the two-year-olds Submission and Portal a nice workout over three furlongs, Latham being on Portal and Rayner himself or. the Limond filly. They left the distance behind in 38sec., and as Suomission appears to have made a good recovery from the leg injuries suffered on the trip back from Ellerslie she should be in good shape for the Wanganui Jockey Ciub's meeting at the end of the month. Four furlongs in 54sec. was the task accomplisned by All Bunsby with K. Chote in the saddle. He is engaged at Opunake to-morrow. L. G. Butler sent Darthura (M. Horne) and The Tryst (K. Chote) over five furlongs, the pair taking a shade over Imin. 6sec., but they were not pushed. They are engaged at the Egmont meeting next week. uady Hoariri was given long, strong .work on the ins.ue inack, and Miss Jack did pacework. The after-breakfast brigade consisted of some more Hawera-engaged horses, including Airing, who hit out; freely over five furlongs without being required to make time. Lady Hoariri was sent over four flights of the schooling hurdles, wim J. Head in the saddle, and she jumped cleanly. She is improving at jumping and should make good over •the battens with experience. Head also schooled All Spirit over six flights of hurdles. All Spirit may be seen over the battens at Hawera next week. ON HAWERA TRACKS OPUNAKE CANDIDATES THE FINAL GALLOPS Although a trifle heavy befoie breakfast the plough was freely used at Hawera on Thursday morning when final gallops for the Opunake meeting were featured, writes “Goldspur” in the Hawera Star. With the assistance of Chief Lord (Ryan) over the first two in 26ssec. Judgment (Cavaney) and Kokako (Sexton) finished practically on terms at the end of half a mile along the j back in 50istc. Judgment completed his task in pleasing rashion. Resinguard (Fryer) comfortably defeated Colonel Bunsby (Cavaney> over five furlongs in 1.61. Fiancee (Ryan) commenced several lengths in advance of Te Huia (Edwards) from the five furlong peg and maintained her advantage all the way to record 51sec. for the last half-mile. Both horses are in first-class order. Silver Gilt (Cavaney) ran the last half of five furlongs in 521 sec. without being hurried. Notium (Cole) completed pacework by sprinting a couple of furlongs in 25istc. For a similar effort Le Marquis (Grylls) registered 26sec. The latter should go close to breaking his maiden status at Opunake. War Lap (Edwards) strode over half a mile in 52 2-ssec. Viracious (Sexton) shaded Naughty Marietta (Ryan) at the end of six furlongs traversed in 1.18. Although he had little in reserve at the finish Gold Card moved smartly over three furlongs in 37 4-sscc. He may be capable oi a surprise in the juvenile event. Race Call Goes Well. Race Call (Farland) was not out to make time when covering six furlongs < inree-quarter pace. He has freshened up nicely since Trentham. Sweet Acre (Chaplin) sprinted two furlongs in 26Lsec. Golden Orchid (Edwards) obtained a break on Amoroso (Sexton) at the start of five furlongs, but the latter was soon in front and beat his companion home in 1.4 i, Amoroso should give a good account of himself at Ounake. Disturbed (Holland) followed the pair a long way in the rear, after being badly left. With the track considerably drier little separated Winsome Lu (Farland) and Alyth (Edwards) at the conclusion of six furlongs in 1.16 1-5 —a smart effort. Both mares appealed to be going well at the finish and enhanced their Opunake prospects. Algerian (Prisk) and Kilometre (Sexton), traversed half a mile on the trial grass in 52 l-ssec., with the

former holding an advantage at the close. Additional riding engagements announced include:— S. Anderson: Fiancee (twice). R. J. Flower: Kokako (twice). J. K. Reynolds: Viracious (Cup), Judgment, Daisy Chain. W. Jenkins: Amoroso. S. T. Edwards: War Lap, Lady Boden. Airing. W. J. Broughton: Naughty Marietta. H. Fryer: Resinguard, Gold Card N. Cavaney: Colonel Bunsby. Kokako and War Lap are doubtful starters at Opunake.
