On some greens play was commenced bu r players were driven to shelter in the pavilion. Anniversary Day Holiday. Anniversary Day in the Wellington province falls next Sunday, January 22. Anniversary Day is not a statutory holiday but this year, because it falls on a Sunday, it will be generally observed on the Monday. The construction of the holiday clause in certain awards will decide whether workers will receive a holiday on Monday. Native Land Court. Five cases are listed to be heard al. a sitting of the Native Land Court al Wanganui on February 8. Three of the cases concern the ascertaining of the amount of compensation payable to the native owners for land taker under the Public Works Act, of 1908, for reading purposes. Another case deals with compensation for land taken for the development of water power. Baths Takings Down. The unseasonable weather experienced during recent weeks has had an adverse effect on the takings at the various swimming baths in Wanganui, it being found that the usual large attendance of .children during the summer vacation has dropped away considerably. The campaign to be conducted by the Wanganui Swimming Centre in the teaching of swimming, however, is expected to effect an improvement. During one recent week the custodian of one of the district baths reported that his takings amounted to Is Bd. Bullets in Sashes. Bullet holes have been found in window sashes in the Wanganui Hospital Board’s new isolation block, the bullets apparently coming from an area of rough land at the rear of the building where there are a number ol rabbits. The isolation block has not been used yet because of the shortage of nurses but the board is taking a serious view of the shooting and has placed the matter in he hands of the Gonville police. Some months ago it was found necessary to erect a barbed wire fence at the back of the hospital to prevent people from taking a shortcut through the hospital grounds from Tawa Street. Week-end Weather. Showery weather on Saturday and a boisterous north-westerly wind yesterday made conditions unpleasant out-of-doors during the week-end. The showers on Saturday were not sufficient to interfere with summer sports but yesterday’s wind hampered rowers, tennis players and other outdoot sportsmen. The wind whipped up the surf at Castlecliff and Kai Iwi yesterday and as a result there were only a scattering of swimmers. The pool weather this season has had a disastrous effect of baths takings and the figures to date are w’ell below the returns for the same period of last year. No flying was done at the Wanganui Airport yesterday. Maori Cyclist Injured. Scalp wounds and injuries to the head were received by Katie Tiera, an aged Maori woman, when she was knocked down at Putiki about 3.45 p.m. yesterday by a motor-car driven by Patrick John Minogue, of New Plymouth, who was driving to Wellington. The accident occurred about half a mile fro mthe Town Bridge near the bend approaching Leigh’s Store and after a heavy shower of rain. It is understood that the car skidded when passing the cycle and collided with the rear wheel. The injured woman was taken to the Wanganui Public Hospital by the St. John Free Ambulance. Band’s Busy Day. Members of the Highland Pipe Band had a busy day yesterday. During the morning the band held a full-dress parade at Cook’s Gardens when the movements of the drummajor’s display to be presented at the championship contest at Christchurch next month were practised. The band paraded at Aramoho Park during the afternoon and in addition to playing a programme of music, presented the drum-major’s display. The band was entertained at afternoon tea by a committee of ladies headed by Mrs. G. D. Hazelwood. Next week-end the band will journey to Waipukurau as the guest of the Waipukurau A. and P. Association, and the following week-end will parade at the Turakina Caledonian Society's annual sports. New Zealand Artist. Mention is made in the New Zealand News, a London publication for New Zealanders, of Mr. Alan Browne, who lectured in Wanganui last year and formerly taught at the Friends School. "Mr. Alan Brown, the artist and climber, who has become wellknown in Britain and in New Zealand, recently returned to England after spending seven months in preparing an illustrated account of Mt. Tasman and the South Westland glacier region which is one of the chief glories of New Zealand, the paper said. "He has been giving the lecture in many parts of the country, but we-feel that he should have the opportunity of showing these wonderful views, taken ana coloured by himself, in the centre of London. We have accordingly arranged with the Royal Empire Society for a gathering at the society’s headquarters, Northumberland Avenue, when Mr. Browne will present the Tasman material with a selection of views from his North Island lecture in addition.”
