WANGANUI BASEBALL

LAST SATURDAY’S RESULTS SHIELD .MATCHES RESUMED The Wanganui Baseball Association’s teams continued competition for the Bensel Shield on Saturday. It was the best baseball seen this season. Wanganui East had a close win over United by 20 to 19. Following game between Sash and Door and this outstanding performance was the Pirates. The blacks won by three runs. This was also ail excellent game. —Pirates 25, Sash and Door 22. Another great game was between Harrier A and Merewethers, Harriers A winning by 20 to 19, one run to the good. Watersiders A beat P. and T. by one run only, the score being 23-22. The last two games, Star B v. Watersiders B and Star A v. Harriers B were both conspicuous by their results. Star B took its game from Watersiders B by forfeit. Star A was too good for its opponents, Harriers B, and the final score was 65-6.

The weather conditions were showery and the teams had to play with wet balls which were hard to hold. When these conditions are taken into consideration it is encouraging to note the improved form baseball players have produced in a few short weeks. Next years may see Wanganui the New Zealand champions:— Results:—

Due to a late start, this game was only played for five innings a side. Both teams thoroughly enjoyed the game, the rain making no difference to the play. The game was closely fought out, being fast, open and exciting. There was little difference between the two teams. Good team work won the game for Wanganui East. Star A v. Harriers B Star A 7 6 15 20 10 3 2—63 Harriers 8001022 1— 6 Home runs.—Star A: W. Copley, J. Wakelin one each.

A fast, spectacular and open game was played by both sides. Pirates deserved their win. Aften being ten runs down at the end of the second innings they fought back with keen fielding. The pitcher's spin-pitching caused the opposition batsmen to hit up catch balls, which were safely taken. The wet and slippery ball did not affect Pirates’ fielding as it did that of Sash and Door. For Sash and Door Vernon played an outstanding game.
