OBITUARY
MR. S. H. RAI NOTED STUDENT OF. LANGUAGES Received Jan. 4, 5.5 p.m. LONDON, Jan. 3. The death has occurred of Sidney Herbert Ray, an authority on Oceanic languages. Deceased had been a student of Oceanic languages since 1837 and a Fellow of the Anthropological Institute since 1888. He was considerably connected with the study of New Guinea and made many visits to that quarter. He prepared text books and vocabularies on the languages of New Guinea and Melanesia and was a member of many commissions and expeditions.
