FIRE ON LAUNCH

INCIDENT AT KAWAU I Per Press Association.] AUCKLAND, Jan. 4. There was wild excitement in Mansion House Bay, Kawau Island, yesterday afternoon, wnen Connie V, one of the largest and most luxutious launches in the harbour caught fire alongside the wharf. Mr. E Ballantyne, of Hamilton, the owner, was filling the petrol tanks preparatory to taking a party for a cruise. Suddenly an explosion occurred and fire broke out in the engine-room. Efforts to extinguish the blaze with

fire extinguishers from the many launches in the harbour were of no avail, and Mr. Baliantyne decided to scuttle the craft. Seizing an axe, he hacked a hole in her hull, causing the launch to sink. When beached it was found that she was not seriously damaged. She will be brought to Auckland for repairs.
