WOMEN ASSAULTED
TWO ATTACKS REPORTED IN DUNEDIN ONE STRUCK BY A BOTTLE [ Per Press Association.] DUNEDIN, Jan. 3. On two consecutive nights women in the streets of the city have been assaulted by unknown men, or, possibly, by the same man. The first assault took place about. 10 p.m. on Sunday, when a married woman was assaulted by an unknown man in Haywood Street, near Patrick Street. The woman was struck on the head by a bottle which broke, causing considerable bruising and a slight scalp wound. When the woman began to scream the assailant endeavoured to silence her by clasping a hand over her mouth. Fortunately, two men were in the vicinity and the assailant, on seeing them, fled in the direction of Glen Road. The woman’s condition was not serious, but she required medical treatment. At approximately the same time tonight, in a lonely part of Cumberland Street, a single woman, who was walking home alone, heard footsteps close behind her. She half turned and glanced back, seeing a man who immediately caught hold of her by the shoulders. The woman screamed, her assailant then seizing her by the throat with both hands. Attracted by the noise of the woman’s screams, a passing cyclist rode up and the assailant made off hastily.
