LAWN TENNIS

WANGANUI TOURNEY UNEXPECTED DEFEAT MISS J. HANSEN BEATEN LN SINGLES Tennis of a good standard was displayed at the Wanganui Club’s courts yesterday, when the championship and handicap events in the Wanganui Lawn Tennis Association’s annual New Year tourney were continued. The fixture was again favoured by fine weather and progress was made with the elimination rounds, the semifinals stages being reached in most of the championship events. The courts were in good order yesterday and played well. A strong westerly wind was a slight worry to players on the more exposed courts but otherwise conditions were favourable. The highlight of yesterday’s play was the defeat of the women's singles champion, Miss J. Hansen (Auckland) by Miss K. O’Sullivan, of Hawera, in the third round. Miss Hansen had little difficulty in accounting for Miss O. Glover in her second-round game, but was unable to reproduce her usual form in her third-round fixture. Miss O’Sullivan, on the other hand, played soundly and took the first set 6-2. Miss Hansen recovered in the second set and took the honours 6-2. In the final set the matches were hard fought, but Miss O'Sullivan had the edge all the way to win 7-5. In the men’s singles championship, J. J. McCarthy (Taranaki), who won the title two years ago, was unable to stand up to the onslaught of E. Dickie in the fourth round and went down 6-3, 4-6, 4-6. A. Dickie accounted for M. L. Lampe in the same round, the game going to three sets. In the semi-finals to-day, E. Dickie is to meet W. T. Pountney and Lyons meets A. Dickie. The semi-finalists in the ladies’ singles are Miss K. O'Sullivan (Hawera) and Miss M. Dickie (Waverley) and Miss J. Ramsay (Auckland), the latter playing the winner of the match between Misses M. Purcell and Symes. In the ladies’ doubles championship, Misses J. Hansen and J. Ramsay (Auckland) will play Misses Bright and Griffiths and Misses M. Purcell and P. Wylds will meet Misses M. Dickie and K. O’Sullivan. M. L. Lampe and N. Hay-Campbell, who won a hard-fought game against Pountney and Hutchinson yesterday afternoon, will meet A. and E. Dickie. At the recent tournament at Hawera these players fought out a semi-final, victory going to the Dickie brothers 3-6, 3-6. As the match was played during rain, Hay-Campbell, who wears glasses, was under a handicap and was unable to produce his best form. In the other semi-final, Barkman and Earle (Wanganui) will play Lyons and McCarthy and a closely-fought contest should eventuate. The following players are required to be at the courts at 9 a.m. to-day: Lampe and Miss J. Hansen, Rountree and Miss Glover to play Miss I. Glover and Page, Wilson and Miss Goldfinch to play Hay-Campbell and Miss Clarke, Miss Purcell to play Miss Syme, Miss M. Dickie and A. Dickie, Pountney, Lyons, E. Dickie, Miss O’Sullivan, Miss J. Ramsay, Gordon, Glenn, Cook, Mailman, and Miss G. Izard. The semi-finals and finals of the championships will be played to-day.
